Bulldogs: Description of A Breed Apart When you think of a bulldog, do you see a ferocious animal or a cute loveable dog? Despite what their history, these dogs can be very loyal and affectionate when given the chance. Bulldogs are also known as English or British Bulldogs. They originated from England . The primary use for the bulldog back in the old days, and that means hundreds of years ago, was to participate in bull baiting, a violent blood sport. Later on, laws prohibited these sports, resulting in the decline of purebred bulldogs. Some people associate the heritage of the dog as a fighter to their current day personality. They are strong, but never act aggressive unless they are provoked or need attention. Today, these dogs are more of a family companion and also shown in dog competitions. Bulldogs are stocky, with short limbs and a solid middle. They usually stand anywhere from 14-15 inches in height and can weigh up to 40-55 pounds, females being a little smaller than males. A distinctive feature of the bulldog is their large and slightly square skull shape, with the circumferences of the head being about equal to the height of the dog at its shoulders. The face and muzzle are very short, and the forehead is flattened. The jawbones are large and powerful, with the lower jaw protruding in front of the upper jaw in an upward slant. The ears of this breed are located high on the corners of the skull, away from the eyes. The ears are small, so they never stand erect or droop, but appear to be folded in on themselves instead. A bulldogs shape is wide from the shoulders, growing narrower toward the rear, and their tails hang short and low. The weight of a bulldog also causes them to walk with a shuffle, which is one of their many endearing traits. Their coats are short and shiny, and often come in red, white, fallow (which is pale cream to a lighter fawn) and also fawn colors. Despite the appearance of being slow, these dogs are very quick to surprise with their athletic ability. Through the ancestry of the bulldog, they have been breed to defend the home and their family, but not with the vicious actions that one assumes. The look of the bulldog can also be a deterrent to anyone wanting to cause trouble, but they also show a physical sense of loyalty to the home that they defend. Most bulldogs can be sedentary, however not all of this breed are lacking in physical strength. Like any dog breed, the bulldog has its share of genetic defects and ailments. To be sure to acquire a gentle bulldog, it is best to buy a puppy from a respectable breeder who has trained and lovingly treated the animal to ensure a happy personality. As the bulldog grows older, it will become more affectionate and loyal to its owner and the family it belongs to. The bulldog tolerates children playing with them. However, as with any dog, make sure that the children are never left unattended with their pets and also show respect to the dog and his physical or mental well-being. _____________________________________________ ARTICLES
